5 Questions on Analogue Photography with…

Posted on 1/21/2014 by UNITED PHOTO PRESS MAGAZINE

In our ongoing series "5 Questions on Analogue Photography with…" we send out the same set of questions to photographers. This time Maren Michaelis - fashion designer, photographer and art director - answered these questions and prepared a very fascinating burlesque photo gallery for us.

Name: Maren Michaelis
Occupation: fashion designer/ photographer/ art director
Country: Germany

1. Tell us about yourself in three sentences maximum?
Always looking for interesting and odd things in life. Design and music are my life, the way I can express myself. There are no boundaries and life is shitty enough, thats why I need to be constantly on the move.

2. Why do you still shoot analogue?
Because digital is a whole lotta different thing. The quality will never be reachable and its got depth and high contrast, you can always see the difference. Often digital is flat and soulless.

3. What photographic equipment (cameras, films, and accessories) do you usually have in your bag?
Digital Canon camera and an analogue camera (mostly my beloved small Diana with flash and some dia film), zoom objective, prime lens, external flash, lots of accus and compact flash cards. The Diana is great to carry out at night, if the big camera and equipment are too heavy.

4. Share a trick of yours that will always result to a great photo.
Cross-processing dia film makes great bold colours!

5. What photographers influence your work?
It’s more like film stills (czech stop motion, 20ies era) and people who inspire me. Especially performers and it’s all spontaneous. The photographers I admire the most these days are Madame Peripetie, Miles Aldridge and Paolo Roversi.

Thanks to Maren for taking the time to answer our questions. Check out more of her work on her website marenmichaelis.com and have a look at the work of a talented analogue photographer and good friend of hers, Melike Oklap.
